I’m looking forward to discussing the English and the Exotic with Essie Fox at Oxford Literary Festival on Friday 28th March.
The event is chaired by Lucy Atkins and we’ll be exploring spirituality and exoticism in the mid-Victorian era and talking about the inspirations for our novels.
My novel The Sacred River follows three very different women who leave London in 1882 for an Egypt in the grip of an earlier Arab spring. What they find will profoundly affect them all.
Essie Fox’s The Goddess and the Thief examines the Victorian obsession with the occult and spiritualism, and Britain’s troubled relationship with the Raj.

News of forthcoming events at Teddington Library on May 20 and Chambery Festival du Premier Roman 22-25 May to follow.
